PS/Madeira says that in the region “the normal functioning of institutions is at stake”

The PS believes that the proper functioning of democratic institutions in Madeira is under threat and, in a vote of no confidence in the regional government, argues that there are no conditions for the formation of a new executive within the current parliamentary structure.

“The normal functioning of democratic institutions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is at stake. There are no objective conditions for the formation of a new regional government within the current regional parliamentary framework. The loss of trust of the residents of Madeira and Porto Santos is irreversible,” the statement said. text of the vote of no confidence presented this Friday by the parliamentary group PS/Madeira.

The vote of no confidence in the PS, which was submitted this Friday to the Legislative Assembly of Funchal, comes after the President of the Regional Government of Madeira (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named on Wednesday as a defendant in the investigation. which investigates suspicions of corruption, abuse of power, malfeasance, attacks on the rule of law and other crimes.

The case also involves two businessmen and the mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado, three of whom were detained during a police operation launched on January 24 in Madeira and several cities on the continent.

In the text, the Socialists argue that Miguel Albuquerque “has no conditions to remain in office, so for the most part there is no doubt that the regional government, which is the subject of an investigation on the same grounds, does not have the conditions to survive.”

The PS Parliamentary Group, the largest opposition group in the Madeira Legislative Assembly (occupies 11 of the 47 seats in the semi-circle), also emphasizes that the facts under investigation “were carried out not only by the President of the Regional Government”, but also by the entire executive branch and recalls that in a note published on Wednesday by the Ministry of State, referred to “political officials of the regional government of Madeira” and “regional entities”.

In the petition, the PS also recalls that, “despite the seriousness of the facts under investigation,” the chairman of the regional government has already publicly guaranteed that he will not resign.

Socialists also remember that PAN, the party that maintains the parliamentary majority in Madeira, has already admitted that Miguel Albuquerque “has no conditions to remain in office.”

On the other hand, the PS emphasizes that Madeira is “the target of the mediatization of justice in the media, with all the ensuing consequences for the image and conduct of business in the region, while, both at the regional level, both at the international and at the national level there is an urgent need for government stability.”

“We must be uncompromising in protecting the interests of the people of Madeira and Porto Santos. This means that we must return to the people the ability to choose a new regional government,” they argue.

“The PS/Madeira Parliamentary Group presents a vote of no confidence in the XIV Regional Government of Madeira because it considers that the charge is too serious and that the regional government is irreparably compromised and unable to survive,” the text reads.
