The CDU wants a “strong, serious and real bet” on regional production

The CDU candidate for the Azores regional legislative elections, Paula Dec Mota, this Sunday defended a “strong, serious and real” commitment to regional production and lamented the lack of trust in politicians due to a string of controversial cases.

“I would like to see strong, serious and real investment in regional production and a policy or serious program to support regional production,” Paula Dec Mota told Lusa after visiting an agricultural fair in Angra do Heroismo. on the island of Terceira.

The candidate, who tops the list of Fayal and compensation circles, said there are “many farmers who have given up” farming over the years.

“Our agriculture is very diversified and could be bigger, but due to the amount of work they do and the lack of appreciation of the product, they end up abandoning it,” he warned, asking: “What are the Azores without their agriculture and without it agriculture is developed?

According to the CDU candidate, who unites the Communist and Ecological parties of Os Verdes, “a region without this effectively strong manufacturing sector becomes increasingly dependent on the outside world, at the mercy of prices and desires alien” to the needs of the population.

Accompanied by Joao Oliveira, the CDU’s first candidate for the European Parliament elections, who this Sunday concludes a visit to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Paula Dec Mota insisted on the need for a “strong program of support” for agriculture and the valorization of products.

The candidate added that in contacts with voters, many express a “general sense of distrust in politicians due to a string of” controversial cases.

“We are trying to give a word of hope (…) that different policies are possible that serve citizens and not just serve the interests of parties,” said the head of the list.

Stressing that this coalition “has never had any interests other than improving people’s lives,” Paula Dec Motha noted that this can be judged from “concrete examples”, both from the position and from the history of the regional parliament.

The candidate also acknowledged some concerns that this lack of confidence might prompt him to abstain.

“I have some concerns that people feel, although without any hope, that voting is not worth voting, and that is what we must counteract,” he added, emphasizing that “not only does abstention not solve the problem, but it allows others will be able to keep everything the same.”

The President of the Republic decided to dissolve the Parliament of the Azores and call early elections for February 4 after the adoption of this year’s budget. Eleven candidates are vying for the regional legislatures, with 57 seats in the hemicycle: PSD/CDS-PP/PPM (the coalition that currently governs the region), ADN, CDU (PCP/PEV), PAN, Alternative 21 (MPT /PEV). Alliance), Illinois, Chega, Belgium, PS, JPP and Livre.

In 2020, the PS won but lost its absolute majority, giving rise to a right-wing post-election coalition supported by a majority of 29 MPs after signing agreements on parliamentary influence with Chega and IL (which violated it in 2023). PS, BE and PAN had a total of 28 mandates.

The Terceira constituency, in which 10 political forces compete, elects 10 deputies to the Regional Legislative Assembly. In the 2020 regional elections, the PS had five mandates, the SDP had four, and the SDS-NP had one.
