A member of the national secretariat of the PS, João Torres, this Sunday refused to specify whether he was considering a “deal of the left” that would include Livre, but said that the Socialists wish to “maintain and deepen” the dialogue with this political force.
Speaking at the end of the final meeting of the XIII Congress of the Free, which took place this weekend in Porto, Joao Torres explained that the PS is “focused” on achieving the “best possible result” in the March elections, without specifying what result the mathematician is.
Asked several times about the possibility of the PS joining the new thing that now included Livre, the Socialist representative at the Livre congress did not give a direct answer several times when asked on this topic: “This is not the time to talk about what will happen after legislative elections in March.”
“The PS is fighting for the best result in the legislative elections, and Livre will certainly strive for the same, like all party political forces, now is not the time to speculate on what might happen next,” he reiterated.
However, João Torres suggested that the Socialists are not pushing Livre aside: “We have had a frank and open dialogue with this politico-party force and we expect that we will be able to maintain this dialogue and deepen this dialogue in the future.”
João Torres later explained that Livre and the PS agreed on the goal of creating “a dam of the far right, and to build and develop a republican and democratic pedagogy that responds to the need to block the far right and strengthen the foundations of our democracy.” “
“I deeply believe that a strong and mature democracy is built on the assumption of convergence and divergence between different political party forces,” he said.
