The Regional Council of the PSD/Madeira canceled this Monday the meeting in which the deputy of Miguel Albuquerque was appointed President of the Executive, following his resignation from a position already formalized with the representative of the Republic.
The meeting was scheduled for 18:00 in Funchal, but was canceled after Miguel Albuquerque, at his request, was received by the representative of the Republic, Ireneu Barreto, before whom he resigned as president of the regional government (PSD/SDS-PP).
Madeira’s chief executive announced on Friday that he would resign from his position two days after he was named as a defendant in an investigation into allegations of corruption in Madeira that led to the arrest of Funchal Mayor Pedro Calado (SPS). ), as well as two businessmen associated with the construction and tourism sectors.
This Monday, following a meeting with the representative of the Republic, Miguel Albuquerque refused to say who would be appointed instead of him, adding that he would now meet again with the party authorities.
“There will be informal meetings with the party leadership in order to find a solution that meets the interests of this majority. [PSD/CDS-PP, com acordo de incidência parlamentar com o PAN] and is in the interests of the people of Madeira,” he said.
The representative of the Republic accepted the resignation of Miguel Albuquerque, but specified that it would not have immediate consequences.
Madeira’s government president has been named as a defendant in the investigation, which is looking into allegations of corruption, abuse of power, malfeasance, attacks on the rule of law and other crimes.
The mayor of Funchal, who also resigned from his post, and two businessmen associated with the construction and tourism sectors involved in this process were arrested in a police operation launched on January 24, mainly in Madeira, but also in the Azores and in several cities on the continent.
The hearings for the three detainees began this afternoon at the Central Court of Criminal Investigations in the Lisbon Justice Building.
