The general secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, said this Monday that it makes no sense to give up the district of Aveiro, where he comes from, to run for Lisbon in the legislative elections.
“This is my land, I have always been a candidate for this constituency, it made no sense to give up my constituency, to give up the Aveiro constituency, to run for Lisbon. I can’t talk about all of Portugal and I want a country that respects and supports the whole territory, and then it will not be a candidate for my land,” said Pedro Nuno.
The Socialists’ general secretary spoke before the Aveiro court after presenting the lists of PS candidates for the legislative elections in the Aveiro district.
When asked by journalists, Pedro Nuno refused to comment on the decision of PSD leader Luis Montenegro, who headed Aveiro’s list in 2015 and who will be AD number one in Lisbon in the next legislative elections.
“I don’t decide other people’s options. I only decide mine. I am very proud to be from São João da Madeira, from the district of Aveiro, and that is why I am running here. I can’t speak for others,” he said.
The Socialist general secretary did not set a target for the number of deputies he hopes to achieve in the constituency, adding only that victory is the goal of the PS.
“We are working to win elections everywhere. This is the main goal of PS. We want to win on March 10 and, obviously, in Aveiro too. I don’t want to indicate the number of deputies now, but victory is our goal.”
In the last legislative elections in 2022, the PS managed to elect eight deputies in the Aveiro district, the PSD seven, and Chega one.
