The Association of Former Deputies of the Assembly of the Republic (AEDAR), led by former Socialist minister Jorge Lacao, signs a series of cooperation protocols on Wednesday and prepares a series of debates on structural issues of Portuguese democracy.
AEDAR was created in July 2003, has been recognized as being of parliamentary interest since 2006, and in December last year was the subject of a decree by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, “confirming the institutional significance of its existence.” and activities.”
At the political level, AEDAR brings together former MPs from different ideological backgrounds into its corporate bodies and, among other goals, seeks to “contribute to the enhancement of the value of Parliament, the promotion of the values and principles of the democratic rule of law and inherent political pluralism.”
On Wednesday, at 17:00, at the Mario Soares/Maria Barroso Foundation in Lisbon, this association signs a series of cooperation protocols with organizations such as Associação Participar + Civicus, GRIBCS (Iberian Cultural and Social Organization), Sedes (Association for Economic and Social Development ) and UCCLA (Union of Lusophone Capitals.
This set of protocols also includes ANAM (National Association of Municipal Assemblies) and the Mario Soares/Maria Barroso Foundation. With these agreements, the association of former deputies intends to “contribute to the strengthening of citizenship and its status, showing solidarity and social responsibility, protecting the overall quality of institutions and the improvement of the democratic regime.”
According to AEDAR, this meeting on Wednesday will be held at the Mario Soares/Maria Barroso Foundation, rather than at the Assembly of the Republic, as the parliament is currently limited in organizing external events due to the dissolution.
On February 23, this association is holding a colloquium on “Climate change, drought and water resources” in Ferreira do Alentejo, and on March 22, a conference on “The Captains’ Movement in preparation for the April 25 Revolution.” “, with speaker Vasco Lourenço.
A day after the 50th anniversary ceremony on April 25, 1974, AEDAR organizes a new conference on the theme: “Portugal before and after freedom” with the participation of historians Fernando Rosas and Irene Pimentel, as well as former minister Eduardo Marcal Grilo.
Sessions on the topic “Social justice, labor and social consultation” will be held until the end of the year (in May); “Parliamentarism in Portuguese Democracy” (June); “Culture and Word” (July); “The Justice We Have and the Justice We Want” (September); “Memory with History” (October); “Great National Patterns” (November); and “Growth Strategies for the Portuguese Economy” (December).
