PCP says Madeira needs ‘changes in protagonists and policies’

On Tuesday, the PCP secretary general said Madeira needed a change of supporters and policies and called for elections in the autonomous region to be held “as quickly as possible within constitutional time frames.”

“What Madeira needs is to go quickly to elections, within possible constitutional deadlines, and this is not a change of protagonists, but a change of protagonists and policies, because if different supporters remain with the same policies, the consequences in the daily life of Madeirans are visible everyone,” said Paulo Raimundo.

The communist leader made statements to journalists outside the OGMA in Alverque and said that the experience we have in Madeira shows that “regardless of the protagonists, specific policies do not respond to the problems of the Madeirans.”

“Now there are all these cases that we are looking at from a legal and criminal point of view – let everything be investigated – but the main problem is different: politics does not serve the Madeirans, it does not serve Porto Santos. , and that’s what needs to change,” he said.

According to Paulo Raimundo, in Madeira the problem is not to change the main characters “so that everything remains the same, to preserve the foundations of the wrong policy.”

“What we need is to change the main characters, but in favor of a different politics. This is what we really strive for,” he emphasized.

Regarding judicial investigations, the PKP secretary general stated that “everything that is investigated must be investigated, and we must get to the bottom of all matters” so that “nothing is left unsolved.”

“The events that are now being discussed are not new, for many years the HDZ in Madeira has condemned these cases, these deals, these friends, this corruption, from which one cannot even draw a formal conclusion that corruption exists, but that there is, there is no doubt about it,” he said.

Asked whether he welcomed the possibility of Miguel Albuquerque leaving the presidency of the government before the approval of the regional budget, as reported by Expresso on Tuesday, Paulo Raimundo replied that this was “a practical consequence of this whole process.”

Paulo Raimundo said he was aware that “there are constitutional provisions that do not allow elections to be held tomorrow,” but “it must be clear that they will take place as quickly as possible, within the time frame established by law.”

“The President of the Republic must look at formal issues, but he also cannot help but look at the current situation. The sooner elections can be announced, the better. For us, whether there is a budget or not, there has never been a question: this did not apply to the elections in the Republic, and it will not happen in Madeira,” he said.
