PS Madeira doubts the delay in discussing the proposal for a vote of no confidence

On Tuesday, PS Madeira criticized the silence of the Legislative Assembly and questioned the delay in convening a conference of party representatives to schedule a debate on the party’s vote of no confidence in the regional government.

Socialist Party parliamentary leader Victor Freitas, quoted in the statement, said: “It is strange that ALRAM is still [ Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma da Madeira] did not schedule the said meeting, since four days have already passed since the date of the proposal.”

In the document, the parliamentary group of Madeira Socialists recalls that it presented this proposal at 9:00 am last Friday.

“Today is Tuesday, the 30th, and after these days the Chairman of the Assembly remains silent,” he emphasizes.

The PS and Chega parliamentary groups in the Madeira Assembly submitted motions for a vote of no confidence in the regional government following an investigation into alleged corruption involving the regional government’s president (PSD/CDS), Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, who was named as a defendant in the case.

The chief executive formalized his resignation as representative of the republic on Monday, but Ireneu Barreto decided that it would not take immediate effect despite accepting it.

According to Article 62 of the Political-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the dismissal of the executive involves “the presentation of a request for dismissal by the President of the Regional Government.”

For its part, the PAN Political Committee – the party that demanded the resignation of Miguel Albuquerque in order to preserve the agreement on parliamentary influence guaranteeing an absolute majority of the PSD/USD coalition in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira – said that it agrees that Miguel Albuquerque’s resignation will only take place after approval archipelago budget for 2024 “in the name of stability.”

As for the CDS-PP/Madeira, the PSD partner in the regional government, its leader Rui Barreto, in a statement to journalists on Monday, demanded the immediate dismissal of Miguel Albuquerque and the appointment of a new leader.

On Wednesday, after about 130 searches of houses and other sites carried out by the Judicial Police (PJ), mainly in Madeira, but also in the Azores and various parts of the continent, the then mayor of Funchal Pedro Calado (NSD), leader of the AFA construction group Avelino Fariña and the main shareholder of the civil engineering group Socicorreia, Custódio Correia.

Following this process, Pedro Calado resigned as president of the Chamber of Funchal, a role previously held by the vice-president of the municipality, Cristina Pedra.

According to the SP, at stake are suspicions of active and passive corruption, economic involvement in business, malfeasance, receiving or offering undue advantages, abuse of power and influence peddling.
