The Minister of Agriculture admitted this Thursday the insufficient resources of the Common Agricultural Policy and the corresponding inability to “solve the problems of farmers” in an interview SIC. “We have been attracting the attention of the European Union for two years now. (…) There was a problem with communication,” emphasized Maria do Ceu Antunes.
This Thursday, the farmers’ protest led to the cutting of roads and borders in several parts of the country. The Minister recalled that “the demonstrations we are witnessing are not unique to Portugal.” From this point of view, the protest of hundreds of farmers in Brussels this Thursday “will have the consequences of accelerating” the assessment of a sector with which, according to the minister, she has never had “difficulty in meeting.”
According to a statement released on Wednesday, farmers are demanding the right to adequate food, fair conditions and recognition for their activities. The movement, which describes itself as spontaneous and non-partisan, ensured that Portuguese farmers were ready to “defend themselves against the constant attacks on sustainability, food sovereignty and rural life.”
