The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there will be an additional 35.3 million new cancer cases in 2050, a 77% increase from the 20 million cases estimated in 2022, with alcohol, tobacco smoking and obesity contributing to this increase.
“The scale of cancer is growing,” Freddie Bray, head of cancer surveillance at the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), said at a press conference ahead of World Cancer Day in February. 4th.
The rapid increase in the global cancer burden, according to WHO, reflects population aging and growth, as well as changes in people’s exposure to risk factors, many of which are related to socioeconomic development.
