PS Azores calls for mobilization of voters against the far right

The PS candidate for the presidency of the Azores government in the regional legislative elections, Vasco Cordeiro, insisted this Friday on mobilizing voters, confirming the risk that the far right could rule the archipelago.

“This election, in addition to the issues of proposals and measures, has something very important, namely the possibility and risk that the Azores will become the first region of the country where the far right will formally enter the government, since it has already been accompanied by this decision on the part of the CDS. PPM and PSD, and I think this should mobilize all Azoreans,” said Vasco Cordeiro, also leader of the PS/Açores, referring to Chegu.

In Agua de Pau, in the municipality of Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel, during a street rally on the last day of the election campaign, the candidate, accompanied by the Secretary General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, repeated the call to “socialists, non-socialists, socialists, all those who value democracy , freedom, tolerance, respect for others” so that they can mobilize to vote on Sunday, the day of regional elections, and March 10, the date of national legislative assemblies.

Pedro Nuno Santos stressed that it is necessary to be vigilant and “fight against any hypothesis” about the existence of a “government driven by the extreme right” in the country.

“We have 50 years of democracy, a democracy that took us a long time to achieve. […]. We want to prevent any possibility of such a decision, which has failed here in the Azores,” he added, asking the population not to be deceived by projects that are “unrealizable.”

According to the PS secretary general, it is necessary to “ensure that Portugal does not join the list of countries in which the far right influences and determines governance.”

As the band made its way through the center of the parish, national and regional PS leaders gave out cheers, and Vasco Cordeiro, leader of the San Miguel and compensation circles, insisted, “Let’s do it on Sunday,” “you have to go there.”

From the people, the candidate received wishes of “happiness”, “all the best”, “lots of strength” and “everything is fine”.

“You must go there on Sunday and March 10,” Vasco Cordeiro repeated over and over, to which one woman retorted: “Unless it rains.” The list leader replied: “Even in the rain.”

Citizen Pedro Nuno Santos, referring to the former President of the Regional Government of the Azores (2012-2020), declared that “there is no one better than him, even on the continent”, with the resident guaranteeing that his flag is “Always one, PS and Benfica” .

“Long live Vasco Cordeiro, you will return to your home. [Palácio de Santana, presidência do Governo Regional]“, another citizen added, to which Vasco Cordeiro replied: “This is not my house, but I understand the idea.”

Along the way, the delegation encountered the presence of three victims from Banif, one of whom put up a sign saying “we want our savings” and asked for an explanation, especially from Socialist MP Francisco César, leader of the Azores list. circle in national legislatures.

“Minister [da Agricultura] he already has 430 million to give to farmers because it will tickle Portuguese roads. How can the government in governance fail to solve the problem of the aggrieved parties,” the aggrieved party asked, with Francisco Cesar assuring that the process was moving forward, but the legislature interfered.

The President of the Republic has decided to dissolve the Parliament of the Azores and call early elections for next Sunday, February 4, after this year’s budget is announced. Eleven candidates are vying for the regional legislatures, with 57 seats in the hemicycle: PSD/CDS-PP/PPM (the coalition that currently governs the region), ADN, CDU (PCP/PEV), PAN, Alternative 21 (MPT /PPM) Alliance), Illinois, Chega, Belgium, PS, JPP and Livre.

In 2020, the PS won but lost its absolute majority, giving rise to a right-wing post-election coalition supported by a majority of 29 MPs after signing agreements on parliamentary influence with Chega and IL (which violated it in 2023). PS, BE and PAN had a total of 28 mandates.
