Madeira PAN says it is “misconception” to talk about early elections before March 24

Madeira PAN spokesperson Monica Freitas said this Monday that it was a “mistake” to talk about early elections in the region before March 24, and defended the need to renegotiate the agreement on parliamentary influence with the PSD.

The only PAN deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira noted that the official resignation of the President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS), social democrat Miguel Albuquerque, accepted this Monday by the representative of the Republic after a corresponding investigation with suspicions of corruption, was precisely what the party with a parliamentary majority in archipelago.

“The hypothesis is that a governing government will be created or, essentially, a new government will be appointed. PAN, within the framework of the agreement on parliamentary influence and, as it has always expressed itself, will support the agreement, with some conditions that need to be renegotiated, facing some measures,” Monica Freitas told reporters at the Regional Assembly.

The island manager of People-Animais-Nature also believed that at this time it was important to “follow what is provided for in the Constitution and guarantee the people some stability until Marcelo Rebelo de Souza [Presidente da República]when the time comes, another recommendation.”

Regarding the terms of the parliamentary influence agreement, Monica Freitas said that “they are currently being discussed between PAN and PSD,” declining to provide further details.

However, he added, “this is not about introducing” other elements, but about aspects that were included in the current agreement “that no longer make sense and must be reconsidered.”

“It confuses me when they talk about early elections, because elections can only take place starting in March by decree of the President of the Republic,” said the PAN/Madeira leader, insisting that talking about early elections is a “mistake.” , since “there is a Constitution and a Political-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of Madeira that must be respected.”

Monica Freitas also said that before March 24, there is a possibility that the current regional government will remain in control or a new chief executive will be introduced to the archipelago.

“And this does not change the fact that after the day when the Assembly [Legislativa]“The president of the republic makes a decision: whether we should go to the polls or not,” he emphasized.

Regarding the name that the PSD/Madeira could put forward to replace Miguel Albuquerque as chief executive, the deputy said that the PND “will not have any opinion or interference in the party autonomy of the PSD.”

“What is important, in terms of the government program and budget, is to provide some stability to the people and then the PAN should be revised according to what is provided and therefore the agreement should be revised accordingly,” he added.

The decree dismissing Miguel Albuquerque as president of the government of Madeira, part of the PSD/SDS-PP coalition, has already been published in the Diário da República, meaning that the regional executive took over this Monday.

The decree, signed by the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, was published in the annex to the Diário da República shortly after 18:00 and “comes into force immediately after publication.”

Before the decree was published, the representative of the Republic of Madeira said that it would “immediately” begin to listen to the parties with seats in the Legislative Assembly.

A week ago, Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) was named as a defendant in an investigation into suspected corruption in the region.

The PSD and CDS-PP, which govern the region in a coalition with parliamentary support from the PAN, are pushing for the appointment of a new executive leader, given that the parliamentary majority supporting the regional government has the legitimacy to support a new executive leader. , thus seeking to avoid early elections, as required by PS/Madeira.

As part of the investigation, which resulted in the indictment of Miguel Albuquerque, the then president of the Chamber of Funchal Pedro Calado (PSD), who has since resigned from his post, the head of the AFA construction group Avelino Fariña and the main shareholder of the civil engineering group Socicorreia , Custódio Correia.
