Swedish prosecutors on Wednesday decided to close their investigation into the 2022 explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipeline built to transport Russian natural gas to Germany, as Swedish jurisdiction would not apply in this case.
Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist of the Swedish prosecutor’s office said in a statement that “the investigation was systematic and thorough.”
“In the context of the situation we have at the moment, we can say that Swedish jurisdiction does not apply,” Ljungqvist said.
The Swedish investigation was only one of three investigations into the bombings. Denmark and Germany are also investigating sabotage on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
“There is no indication that Sweden or Swedish citizens were involved in this attack, which took place in international waters,” he added.
The Swedish prosecutor stressed that “the German investigation is ongoing and due to the secrecy that reigns in international legal cooperation,” he cannot “comment further on the cooperation that has taken place” between the countries.
“I will also not be able to comment on the findings of the Swedish investigation or comment on any suspects in the Swedish investigation,” Ljungqvist said.
The Swedish prosecutor emphasized the “good cooperation” with Denmark and Germany, countries with which they “continuously exchanged information and reports on the situation.”
“We have had in-depth cooperation with the investigation carried out by the German authorities. As part of this legal cooperation, we have been able to provide materials that can be used as evidence in the German investigation,” he said.
Four huge gas leaks, preceded by underwater explosions, occurred within hours of each other on September 26, 2022, in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines that connect Russia to Germany and transport most of Russian gas to Europe.
The attacks came as Europe was shifting away from Russian energy sources following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, adding to tensions following the outbreak of war inside Ukraine in February 2022.
