On Wednesday, IL Madeira considered that the parliamentary majority of the PSD/CDS-PP/PAN, which supports the regional executive, is unable to fully fulfill its mandate by following the process of investigating suspicions of corruption, and defended early elections.
“I do not recognize the political legitimacy of the solution that will be proposed by those who are the problem at the moment. The problem is this majority, which is exhausted, and legitimacy requires elections,” said the regional coordinator and the only member of the Legislative Assembly. , Nuno Morna.
The leader of the Liberal Initiative spoke to journalists after meeting with the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, at the Palacio de São Lourenço in Funchal.
The Representative of the Republic began this Wednesday to listen to the parties with seats in the Legislative Assembly, following the dismissal on Monday of the president of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP) and the subsequent dismissal of the executive after Miguel Albuquerque was named as a defendant in an investigation into alleged corruption in Madeira.
“We told the judge, the lawyer very clearly [Ireneu Barreto] that the only solution that we see to this day, that is, a little less than a month from the beginning of this story, that the only solution is to go to the polls,” said Nuno Morna.
On the other hand, the leader of IL Madeira believed that the representative of the Republic was not responsible for the political crisis, placing this burden on the PSD, CDS-PP and PAN “due to the lack of definition, the failure to present reliable solutions to the people of Madeira.”
“I am very confident that this will continue and will not be resolved due to the incapacity of the majority parties,” he said, stressing that “Madeirans deserve clarification and that a solution must be found quickly.”
Nuno Morna, on the other hand, noted that he was contacted by the PS, the largest opposition party in Madeira, but has so far refused to participate in any meetings.
“After the elections, based on the election results, it will be possible to develop scenarios. This is absolutely not the time to talk about this at the moment,” he said, emphasizing that “the Liberal Initiative, whenever possible, will be part of the solution.”
In addition to IL, the Republic’s representative received BE and PAN this Wednesday, and meetings are scheduled for Thursday with PCP, CDS-PP, Chega and JPP.
Representatives of the PS and SDP will be received on Friday.
The hearing was scheduled after the representative of the Republic, Ireneu Barreto, officially accepted on Monday a request for dismissal from the President of the XIV Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, who was named as a defendant in the investigation. due to suspicions of corruption in the region.
After this round of hearings, the representative will decide on the situation in the government in Madeira, since the President of the Republic can only intervene in the process from March 24, when the Legislative Assembly will complete its six months of mandate provided by law.
On January 24, the Judicial Police (SP) carried out some 130 searches at home and outside, mainly in Madeira, but also in the Azores and various parts of the continent, as part of the process of investigating suspicions of active and passive actions. corruption, participation in economic activities in business, malfeasance, receiving or offering of undue advantage, abuse of power and undue influence.
Two days later, Miguel Albuquerque, now a defendant, resigned from his position.
Following the searches, the SP detained the then mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado (NSD), who also resigned from his post, the leader of the AFA construction group, Avelino Fariña, and the main shareholder of the civil engineering group Socicorreia. , Custodio Correia.
