Josep Borrell visited a residential building that was attacked by Russian missiles in Kyiv

European Union (EU) diplomacy chief Josep Borrell concluded his two-day trip to Ukraine with a visit to a residential building hit this Wednesday by Russian missiles in the capital.

“I pay tribute to the innocent citizens who were killed in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine during this latest indiscriminate attack by Russia,” Borrell wrote in a post on the social network X.

The EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy also published photographs of his visit to the building, as well as the shelter, together with the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko.

The mayor said the attack, the third this year against the Ukrainian capital, resulted in a fire in an 18-story apartment building and damaged two high-tension lines, as well as four deaths and 32 injuries.

At a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the Spanish diplomat said that he had to take refuge “like many thousands of Ukrainians” in one of the basements of his hotel along with the rest of the EU delegation during the air raid alert.

Russia today launched a total of 44 missiles and 20 drones across Ukraine, with the capital the main target. Ukrainian air defense managed to shoot down more than forty such shells.

On Tuesday, Borrell began a two-day visit to Ukraine to reaffirm the country’s political and military support for the EU.

The head of European diplomacy also assured today that Ukraine remains an “absolute priority” for the EU and said that “it is necessary to win the war and achieve peace.”

Nearly two years after the Russian invasion began, the front lines have reached a stalemate and Zelensky’s popularity is waning.

Borrell called on his interlocutors for unity as it is “the key to victory” and conveyed a “strong message of solidarity” and “support in financial and military terms, ammunition and weapons.”

“We are ready and will support Ukraine not as much as necessary, but at any cost. Not as a measure of time, but as a measure of quantity, quality and speed,” he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed today that the EU’s supply of one million ammunition to Ukraine must be “fully implemented” in order to “guarantee common security.”

After a meeting with Dmitry Kuleba, Borrell also agreed with the need to “create conditions for accelerating the supply of ammunition and missiles,” and this process, according to him, is “accelerating.”

Last year, 27 countries committed to delivering one million rounds of ammunition by the end of March, but delays are piling up.
