CDS-PP Madeira confirms that the new regional government president is to be sworn in

The leader of the CDS-PP/Madeira, Rui Barreto, confirmed this Thursday that the new president of the regional government is to be sworn in and that the coalition agreement signed with the PSD “remains in force.”

After meeting with the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, at the Palacio de San Lourenzo in Funchal, the centrist told reporters that he had conveyed to the judge-councilor “two lines of power.”

“The first to say that the political agreement that the SDS-PP concluded with the PSD in 2019 and extended in 2023 in accordance with the requirements of the legislature remains in force, it has not expired,” he emphasized.

Secondly, Rui Barreto stressed that “it is necessary to inaugurate a new head of government, a new government, presenting to parliament a new government program that will serve as a vote of confidence, and immediately after that also present a budget that gives us hope and a new beginning.”

The Regional Minister of Economy in the current outgoing executive (PSD/CDS-PP) stated that “in the face of very difficult circumstances, a judicial crisis, it is necessary to separate processes”, emphasizing that regional autonomy provides solutions.” to separate what is judicial from what is legal or constitutional process.”

“We cannot remain within the framework of orphanhood, we must move towards a normal framework, and this decision, which is supported by CDS, PSD as well as PAN, is the best way to normalize public life, as well as social and economic life in the country. region,” he said.

Regarding whether he would be able to integrate the new regional government, Rui Barreto responded that “no personal interests should prevail over the more important interests, which are the interests of Madeira and the people of Madeira”, believing that “this would be a disservice to democracy.”

Rui Barreto, in charge of the judicial investigation into corruption, added that “it doesn’t matter who stays and who goes.”

“What matters at the moment is not who stays or who goes, because we know this government is resigning. […]what we want, desire and what is reflected in the assessment we make of the constitutional framework and the Political-Administrative Statute […] is that Madeira has the autonomy to find a solution now,” he insisted.

In the last regional legislative elections, held last September, the PSD/SDS-PP coalition won, but fell one MP short of an absolute majority in the Madeira Parliament, having signed a parliamentary protection agreement with PAN, a party that has already confirmed that We are ready to provide support in training a new manager.

On Wednesday, the representative of the Republic began to listen to the parties with seats in the Legislative Assembly, following the dismissal on Monday of the president of the regional government and the subsequent dismissal of the executive after Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) was formed. accused as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in Madeira.

After this round of hearings, the representative will decide on the situation in the government in Madeira, since the President of the Republic can only intervene in the process from March 24, when the Legislative Assembly completes its six months of mandate by law.

On January 24, the Judicial Police (JP) carried out some 130 searches at home and outside, mainly in Madeira, but also in the Azores and several areas of the continent, as part of the process of investigating suspicions of active and passive actions. corruption, participation in economic activities in business, malfeasance, receiving or offering of undue advantage, abuse of power and undue influence.

Two days later, Miguel Albuquerque, now a defendant, resigned from his position.

Following the searches, the SP detained the then mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado (NSD), who also resigned from his post, the leader of the AFA construction group, Avelino Fariña, and the main shareholder of the civil engineering group Socicorreia. , Custodio Correia.
