The President of Chega/Azores said this Friday that he is ready to “work out a government solution” and called on Social Democrat Jose Manuel Bolheiro to say what he plans to do after the PS announced a vote against the government program of the PSD/CDS coalition. -PP/PPM.
“Jose Manuel Bolheiro is the one who has to define what he wants. If he wants to hold elections, José Manuel Boleiro will have to tell the Azorean people clearly: that he wants elections. We, for our part, said that we are here to dialogue and find a solution,” José Pacheco told Lusa this Friday.
Azores leader Chegi spoke after PS/Açores president Vasco Cordeiro announced that the party would vote against the government program of the PSD/CDU-PP/PPM coalition, which won regional elections on Sunday without an absolute majority.
“There is too much national politics and too little Azores in the governance that the PSD/CPD/NPM and the Chega coalition are creating in the situation resulting from the elections of February 4th. the political position that the PS/Azores takes regarding the XIV Regional Government Programme, since this is already a clear sign of respect for the autonomy of the Azores, but, equally important, a clear confirmation of the decision-making autonomy of the PS/Azores,” said the leader of the PS/ Azores at a press conference in Ponta Delgada.
The decision was made unanimously at a meeting of the Regional Secretariat and a meeting of the Regional Commission, the highest body between the congresses, held on Thursday in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel.
The decision of the PS does not surprise the leader of Chegi/Azores, as he believes that at the moment “this party is in decline” and “it is a little ignorant after the defeat it suffered.”
José Pacheco believes that the “ball” is now in the court of the SDS/CDU-PP/PPM coalition parties, which “will have to take” their position.
“The PS has already taken its position and the coalition will have to take its own. Do you want elections or not? Do you want the Azores to stagnate for another six months or not?” he said.
In his opinion, the leader of the PSD and the current chairman of the regional government, Jose Manuel Bolheiro, “will have to take on this responsibility and will not play with democracy by shifting the blame to others.”
José Pacheco confirmed that Chega is ready to take on the responsibility “that the people have given him in the elections” in last Sunday’s elections.
“The people said that the coalition does not have a majority and they said to Chege: you have five deputies here who will do your job of governing, overseeing and moving the Azores forward. If anyone wants to resist this, let them take this responsibility.” he concluded, emphasizing that the party remains interested in “being part of the solution.”
In Sunday’s regional elections, the SDP/CDS-PP/PPM elected 26 deputies, three short of an absolute majority.
Jose Manuel Boleiro, leader of the right-wing coalition that has held power in the archipelago since 2020, said he would rule the country with a relative majority for the next four years.
The PS is the second power in the archipelago with 23 mandates, followed by Chega with five mandates. BE, IL and PAN each elected one regional MP, adding to the 57 elected.
