Andre Ventura guarantees that Chega will make a right-wing executive viable only with a “government agreement”, once again rejecting agreements on parliamentary influence, especially because he believes that the PSD will be responsible for “irresponsibility” if it refuses the agreement .
“There must be a government agreement in the fundamental areas that we defend and which are already clear: the fight against corruption, the issue of financial reform, the reform of the political system and the issue of internal governance and security forces,” said the President. He comes to an interview with the Lusa agency about the elections in legislature March 10.
Andre Ventura wants to “conclude an agreement on government measures defined by the two parties,” PSD and Chegoi, and states that “the problem here is not so much the Ministry A, B or C or the Secretariat of State, but the existence of the government.” an agreement guiding the government, defining what measures will be taken by the government, what measures will be taken by the Assembly of the Republic, etc.”
The Chegi leader claims that “according to the government’s agreement, it is difficult” for his party “not to be represented” in the executive branch, but submitted this issue “for consideration after the elections.”
“At this point, it is important to make it clear that we will not enter into any parliamentary agreement, and if there is any understanding, it will always be a governance agreement, not a parliamentary agreement,” he said, stressing that “without this agreement there is no stability.”
“Does this mean the government will fall soon? Not necessarily, we’ll see,” he says.
Ventura notes that “Chega is a party that has chosen stability,” but refuses to support a government if it is “completely contrary” to what his party stands for and believes that budget negotiations will be a “generator of instability.”
If the Democratic Alliance coalition (SDP/CDU-NP/PPM) refuses the agreement with Chega, “the constitutional scenario will be that the AD, without any guarantees of stability, will present its program to parliament, and then we’ll see.”
“We will always do the same thing: we will seek convergence that will create a stable government. If others do not want it, they will be responsible for this scenario of irresponsibility” and for “the transfer of power into the hands of the PS,” he said.
When asked how he would vote on the government program, the Chegi leader refused to answer, noting that he did not yet know what would be in the document.
President Chegi is once again aiming to win the March 10 legislative elections, but admits that the result “polls currently point to as 15 to 20% would obviously be an excellent result for a party that has five years “.
Regarding the election campaign, which will take place from February 25 to March 8, President Chegi indicates that the party will maintain its presence on the streets and rallies, but will also have a “very large investment in digital technology” and that it will try to communicate directly with voters through social media.
Andre Ventura expects to visit all the districts and also undertake a “community tour”, but he does not plan to visit the autonomous regions during the official campaign period, having recently been to the Azores and Madeira.
In an interview with Lusa, Andre Ventura said that in the “core forces” of the PSD there are people working to ensure that this rapprochement exists” with Chega, and noted that contacts between the two parties “have always been there.”
Also, when asked about the selection of former PSD or IL fighters as candidates for Chega deputies, including list leaders, to the detriment of the leaders of his party, Andre Ventura refuses that they are “looking for a place,” stating that in some cases “the likelihood being chosen is not that high.”
“It was about stalking someone. People came up, we opened the door for them, these people showed that they are firmly on our side, and we understand that at this moment they are useful to the party and make the party grow,” defends himself.
