The CEO of a prominent Nigerian bank and his family died in a helicopter crash in California.

Herbert Wigwe, CEO of renowned Nigerian bank Access Bank Group, is among the six killed in a helicopter crash near Nipton, in Southern California, US.

Wigwe’s son and wife were also on the plane that crashed on Friday evening, killing two others, according to Reuters.

The death of Herbert Wigwe and his family was confirmed by World Trade Organization Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the horrific death of Access Bank Group chief executive Herbert Wigwe, his wife and son in a helicopter crash,” the statement said.

“This is a big blow to the banking sector in Nigeria and Africa,” the Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria on Information and Strategy wrote on the same social network.

The National Transportation Safety Board is now continuing its investigation.
