The mayor of Porto said the Stop shopping center has a “very serious neighborhood problem” and said the municipality could use some of the premises to “make viable” the cultural space.
“We have a very serious problem with our neighbors,” Rui Moreira said at a meeting of the Porto Municipal Assembly on Monday evening.
The mayor, responding to a question posed by BE MP Susana Constante Pereira, said that “action has already been carried out with the neighbor”, but the municipality will need to “slow down” the action.
“We are trying to solve the problem,” he said, noting that the problem is an armored door that was allegedly sealed by the owner of the land behind the stop.
Rui Moreira also told MPs that the municipality recognizes the use of some of Stop’s spaces, such as cinemas and multi-use spaces, to “help make the shopping center viable”.
“I will not stop working to open this center,” he added.
At an executive session on January 29, the independent mayor, responding to a question from councilor Ilda Figueiredo of the HDZ, assured that the interventions called for in the report of the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority had been resolved.
The shutdown, home to most rehearsal rooms and studios, closed most of its facilities on July 18, leaving nearly 500 artists and shop owners with nowhere to go, but reopened on Aug. 4 with a fire truck at the door.
The stop will remain open indefinitely following a precautionary measure taken by the owners following the city council’s decision to close the building, Rui Moreira confirmed on September 22.
