A liver transplant unprecedented in Europe was carried out at the Hospital Carri Cabral (HCC) in Lisbon, according to the local health department of São José.
The robotic surgery was performed on the man by a team led by Dr. Pinto Marques. The patient has fully recovered.
In July 2022, Curry Cabral Hospital reached a historic milestone of 2,500 liver transplants. The 2,500th operation was performed on a 61-year-old Ukrainian citizen who is recovering.
The intervention “went through without problems, since fortunately many of these less complex transplantations are carried out by a team like ours, which already has a lot of experience,” Pinto Marques explained at the time, adding that it was a “simple operation” and that “it lasted about nine hours.”
The first liver transplantation in HCC was performed in September 1992 by Joao Rodrigues Pena and Eduardo Barroso. In 2022, 30 years later, Curri-Cabral was the hospital center in Portugal with the largest number of liver transplant patients, with the rest being in Coimbra and Porto, which accounted for approximately 1,600 and 1,550 people respectively.
“We are one of the largest transplant centers in Europe. We perform between 100 and 140 liver transplants a year,” added Pinto Marques.
