Civil Defense warns of possible flooding and falling trees

The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) warned this Thursday of the possibility of floods, falling trees and road accidents due to forecasts of rain, snow, wind and rough seas in the coming days.

The public warning from ANEPC is based on the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecast for periods of rain, especially in the north and center, with the possibility of thunderstorms and snowfall between 800 and 1,000 meters above sea level. , with large accumulation starting from a depth of 1000 meters.

Winds of up to 35 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 85 kilometers per hour are also expected in the highlands.

Waves could reach 12 meters high north of Cabo Raso.

ANEPC warns that slippery road surfaces are expected due to accumulation of ice, snow and water sheets, as well as snowfall in areas and at elevations “where this would not normally occur.”

In its statement, authorities also warned of possible flooding in “historically most vulnerable locations” and in urban areas.

Among preventive measures, ANEPC recommends paying more attention to the most vulnerable groups: children in their first years of life, chronically ill people, older people or people in more isolated situations, outdoor workers and the homeless.

Other recommendations are not to engage in activities related to the sea, namely sport fishing, water sports and walks along the embankment, and to avoid parking cars very close to the embankment.
