The Secretary General of the PS said this Monday that the spirit of Pedro Passos Coelho “will always be present throughout the entire campaign”, after the former Social Democratic Prime Minister joined the campaign of the Democratic Alliance (AD).
“This is not the spirit of AD 1979 that will hang over the campaign. In fact, it is the spirit of Pedro Passos Coelho that will always be present throughout the campaign,” said Pedro Nuno Santos in a speech delivered at a rally in Pavilhão Multiusos Portas do Mar, in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores islands.
The PS leader recalled that Passos “said in April 2011 that it was stupid to say that he would shorten the 13th month. He didn’t just shorten the 13th month, he shortened the 13th month and shortened the 14th month.”
And he continued: “I knew the note when he promised that there would no longer be a need to cut salaries or fire people. But that’s exactly what he did. He said it was a lie that he wanted to raise VAT to recover, but it also went up.”
And the criticism of the SDP continued: “And in pensions, dear comrades, they not only went beyond the “troika”, but also tried to make the cuts permanent. They even tried to cut pensions above 600 euros. The only reason they could do this. They tried to make pension cuts permanent. The only reason they were not permanent was because the Constitutional Court prohibited them. This shouldn’t be hidden in a memo.”
According to Pedro Nuno Santos, who spoke at a rally that the party estimates brought together 450 PS supporters and sympathizers in the Azores, “the memorandum is just a pretext,” and at the time “pensions were being cut.” with conviction and tried to make the cuts permanent.”
“And when the Constitutional Court failed, Luis Montenegro criticized the Constitutional Court. Montenegro was there. Montenegro was there when each of these lies were told to the Portuguese people. Turn the record over and play the same thing. Now it’s Luis Montenegro’s turn. and do it like Pedro Passos Coelho and promise not to cut a penny in any way from anyone’s pension or retirement.” In his opinion, “Luis Montenegro’s problem is the same as Pedro Passos Coelho’s. He has no trust.”
