IL says Ventura’s claims to understanding the right are desperate

On Tuesday, IL’s president downplayed what he called leader Chegi’s statements as “desperate” about possible agreements with the right, reiterating that IL’s position on the issue was clear.

“We are already accustomed to certain attempts, which sometimes seem like desperation, to bring arguments into the discussion when we see that things are not going well. In short, this is Chegi’s modus operandi,” said Rui Rocha after Andre Ventura said in an interview with RTP that right-wing parties must say whether they are ready to “create mutual understanding” if they reach a majority in Sunday’s legislative elections to form stable government.

At the end of the morning dedicated to transport in Setúbal, despite the insistence of journalists, the Liberal leader confirmed that the IL position is very clear, since he has already said who he understands and who he does not understand.

“We are very clear, we are the clearest party in the scenarios in which we are moving,” he insisted, having already left a guarantee in this election campaign that he would not agree to an agreement with Chega.

As for understanding, there are “no hidden moves” on the part of IL, he emphasized.

When asked about the position of the PSD, Rui Rocha stressed that a political party must clarify if it understands that it needs to clarify.

“Note that I cannot put forward scenarios that the SDP leadership denies, and therefore I will not make assumptions based on things that seem to be the result of desperation rather than enduring problems,” he added.

The person who must answer for the PSD is the party leader, Luis Montenegro, he stressed.

In an interview with RTP, Ventura pointed out that there are PSD leaders who have “made themselves known publicly,” naming the names of Pedro Passos Coelho, Miguel Relvas, Angelo Correia and Rui Gomes da Silva.

President Chegi was asked by journalists on Monday evening in Portalegre whether these Social Democrats had conveyed this position directly to him, and he replied that they had not.

“What I said today in an interview with RTP was that some of these people, including several important figures from the PSD, said that Luis Montenegro must find a solution,” he said.

When asked to indicate who gave him this information, the Chegi leader refused: “If I didn’t say it then, I won’t say it now.”

“This is evidence that the PSD will not allow, when I called for manpower, and some even stated this publicly, will not allow the PS to rule the country at the whim of Luis Montenegro,” he said.

More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called to vote on Sunday to elect 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.

18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are competing in these elections.
