This Saturday, the captain of the port of Funchal extended the warnings of rough seas and strong winds until 6:00 am on Sunday.
The warnings are the result of forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the general weather situation (wind and sea) along the archipelago’s coastline.
Marine authorities say winds will blow from the northwest “fresh to very fresh, sometimes strong in the afternoon.”
According to the captain of the port of Funchal, waves on the northern coast can reach six meters, and on the southern coast – three.
“The entire maritime community and the general public are advised to exercise caution both when preparing to go to sea and while at sea or in coastal areas,” the warnings issued said.
Strengthening piers and monitoring moored and anchored vessels, as well as avoiding excursions and recreational fishing near the sea or in areas subject to rough seas are some of the captain’s recommendations.
A high wind warning was initially issued on Friday and a rough sea warning was extended from Wednesday.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo is under a yellow warning for sea disturbances until 6pm today, before turning orange until 9am on Sunday.
