The mayor of Santa Maria da Feira resigns from his position, taking over as deputy AD

Santa Maria da Feira Mayor Emidio Sousa will resign from his position when he takes office as the Democratic Alliance (AD) deputy for Aveiro in Sunday’s legislative elections, the mayor said on Tuesday.

The Social Democrat, who led Aveiro’s list from the coalition between PSD, CDS-PP and PPM, suspended the decree on February 26, as provided by law for mayors who are candidates for the legislature, and the suspension period “ended automatically.” this Monday,” as he himself told Lusa.

“The suspension had a deadline, which ended on Monday, and I will now again be President of the Chamber until I take office in the Assembly of the Republic, which should happen at the beginning of April,” said Emidio Souza.

However, in his third term as President of the Chamber of Feira, the mayor does not expect to take on effective functions in the executive branch and in the meantime will enjoy a vacation, so before his official departure to Parliament, the leadership of the municipality will destined to his number two, Vice-President Amadeu Albergaria.

Emidio Sousa criticized, in fact, the close attention to which his position in the municipality has been subjected since he became a candidate in the legislative elections and led the list of the district of Aveiro, where the AD won with 35.13% of the votes and elected seven deputies, for it is followed by the PS with 27.69% and five elected representatives, Chega with 17.25% and three seats and the Liberal Initiative with 5.11% and one seat in parliament.

According to the mayor, “it is absolutely ridiculous and unworthy of the law to say that mayoral candidates should suspend their campaign functions when the same is not required of prime ministers, ministers or secretaries of state.”

“Whoever is in government can continue to hold office as long as he is a candidate, even though he is better known nationally and discrimination only applies to mayors,” he said.

According to preliminary results of Sunday’s elections, the AD, led by Luis Montenegro, won 29.49% of the votes collected throughout the country and received 79 deputies in the Assembly of the Republic.

The PS came second with 38.66% of the vote and 77 seats elected, followed by Chega as the third national political force with 18.06% of the voters and 48 elected.

With the same number of seats as in the previous legislature, the IL received eight seats in the Assembly of the Republic, the BE five and the PAN one, while the Livre increased its representation from one to four deputies and the CDU, in the opposite direction, lost two deputies. parliamentarians, and now there are only four of them left.

The emigrant community will have to identify four more deputies, whose voting direction will become known only on March 20. Only after this date and after hearing all parties represented in parliament, the President of the Republic will appoint a new prime minister.
