River traffic between Fort Barra in Ilhavo and São Jacinto in Aveiro was interrupted this Wednesday for an indefinite period due to the flooding of the pier where the electric ferry moored at Fort Barra.
In a note published on its website, Aveirobus states that the suspension of the service is due to the lack of security conditions at the Forte da Barra pier.
As an alternative, the company asks users to use road transport services.
Speaking to Lusa, Aveiro Mayor Ribau Esteves said the pier began to sink late Tuesday afternoon and is currently not operational.
The mayor is waiting for a dive team to inspect the hull this Wednesday to find out what happened, but admits the situation may have been related to the pier touching the ground at low tide, which could have caused a crack and water entering the metal structure.
Ribau Estevez also explained that during the day the water will be removed from the structure by pumping, using electric pumps, and only after this operation is completed will it be known how the problem can be solved and how long it will take to solve it. , implement.
The municipality’s president also said that this situation did not cause any damage to the Salicornia electric ferry, which went into operation a little over a month ago.
