Activists transform golf course into urban garden in Oeiras

Six Climáximo activists invaded the Oeiras golf course and planted several types of vegetables and trees to protest against the use of energy and water for recreational purposes early Wednesday morning.

The movement said in a statement that it acted “with its own hands” to build “a world based on real interests and needs” by stopping the “criminal and inappropriate consumption of the super-rich.”

The action follows the findings of a study that identifies risks at a “critical level” in Portugal and southern Europe associated with extreme heat and drought.

According to Climáximo spokesperson Leonor Canadas, the initiative served to “stop the crime of continuing to use energy resources and water to maintain golf courses during the climate crisis and farmers’ protests due to water shortages.”

Climáximo also reminds that “rising food prices due to the effects of the climate crisis caused by drought are clearly being felt and are threatening people’s access to basic foodstuffs.”

“We are experiencing the 10th hottest month in a row on record, we are facing drought in farmland and forests, and the emptying of dams, rivers and ponds, leaving hundreds of farmers stranded across the country, and protests have taken place less than a week ago in the Algarve. “- stressed the group’s representative Leonor Canadas, quoted in the statement.

Also this WednesdayThese Student Climate Strike activists were arrested after they climbed onto the roof of the Bank of Portugal in Lisbon and unfurled a banner with protest phrases demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
