The Technical Secretariat of the Electoral Administration (STAE) of Mozambique has already registered 32.88% of the estimated 7.7 million voters scheduled for the general elections on October 9 this year, a spokeswoman for the body said.
Regina Matsinhe said in a statement to public broadcaster Rádio Moçambique that in the first 15 days of voter registration, which ended today, more than 2.4 million voters were registered, corresponding to 32.88% of the number of voters expected to register.
Matsinhe said registration of Mozambican citizens living abroad began today, with an expected enrollment of about two million voters.
The SNAE spokesman added that the number of registered voters may be greater than those already registered, as there are data that have not yet been recorded due to difficulties in sending information about the operation.
Voter registration began on the 15th of this month and will continue until April 28 in the country, and from this Saturday until April 28 abroad. This process, according to the latest data provided, will cost almost 20 billion metics (288 million euros). National Electoral Commission (CNE).
The electoral body expects to register more than seven million people this year, with 9,165 registration centers and 6,330 teams participating in the process, among others.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9 this year, including presidential ones, in which the current head of state and leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (in power by Frelimo), Filipe Nyusi, will no longer be able to compete, as he has reached the constitutional limit of two terms.
