Free with 63 candidates wanting to join the European list, Rui Tavares is not moving forward

The Livre primaries field 63 candidates seeking to join the party’s list for European elections in June, an internal process in which spokesman Rui Tavares will not participate after acknowledging the possibility.

According to an email sent to members and supporters to whom Lusa had access, 63 candidates, including party leaders and independents, are offering to be part of the list against which Livre will compete in the European elections on June 9.

Among the names released there is no mention of Rui Tavares, who was an independent member of the European Parliament elected on the BE list between 2009 and 2014. In an interview with Lusa in January, the representative left open a candidacy for the European elections even if he were elected to the Assembly of the Republic, something that ultimately happened in the March elections.

Among the candidates is the leader of Livre and chief of staff of the Assembly of the Republic, Tomás Cardoso Pereira, who also works as a municipal deputy in Oeiras.

Filipa Pinto, who was “number two” on Porto’s list for the March legislative elections, and Carlos Teixeira, “number six” from the Lisbon constituency and a biologist, are the other leaders on the published list.

The list also includes party leadership member Filipe Honorio and Ines Pires, who led Leiria’s list in the last legislative elections.

Also a candidate is former journalist and international editor of TVI and CNN Portugal, Filipe Caetano, and co-author of the podcast “Globalistas.”

According to the published calendar, candidates still have to assemble a package of endorsements from members and supporters before the start of the election campaign, which runs from April 3 to April 8.

The results of the first round will be known on April 11, the second – on April 19.

Participation in the Livre primary elections is open to any citizen as long as they sign the party’s charter, respect the code of ethics and sign an “agreement of commitment”, otherwise political trust will be revoked.

Free members and supporters, as well as any citizen over 16 years of age, can vote in these primaries after registering.

All citizens who choose to vote in the Livre primaries must make an honorable pledge to “participate in good faith in the process of open primaries and ensure their fairness and integrity,” subscribe to the principles and political program of the Livre, and declare who is not part of another political process. party.

Elections to the European Parliament are scheduled for June 9.

In the last European elections in 2019, Rui Tavares led the Livre list and Joacine Catar Moreira was “number two”, who was elected as a member of the Assembly of the Republic that same year and lost the political confidence of the party for about two months. . after.

At that time, the party received 1.83% of the vote, equivalent to 60,575 ballots, which was not enough to be elected.
