Finland extended the closure of the border with Russia indefinitely

The Finnish Ministry of the Interior announced this Thursday that the border with Russia will remain closed indefinitely, although the government was expected to review the measure in force from mid-November 2023.

“We have not received any data to suggest that the situation has changed significantly,” Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen explained this Thursday.

Finland has seen an unusual increase in migration flows in recent months since it announced its intention to join NATO, which became official exactly one year ago.

Several countries bordering Russia have condemned the practice, which is also being used by Belarus as retaliation for European Union sanctions, as Poland and the Baltic states have warned.

The border with Finland was closed for the first time in November 2023, although on December 14 Helsinki opened two of the nine border posts spread across its 1,400 kilometers.

However, due to the large number of requests for asylum, the Finnish authorities decided to permanently close the border between the two countries.
