Ana Gomes acquitted of aggravated defamation of Mario Ferreira

Former member of the European Parliament Ana Gomes was acquitted this Thursday by the Bolhão court in a case in which she was accused of defaming the businessman Mário Ferreira.

According to the judge, such behavior does not correspond to the crime of libel.

We are talking about considerations expressed on the social network Brazil with more than 500 kilograms of drugs when he was about to return to Portugal.

“What[ue] Cute! Thanks to @expresso we discover that[ue] multifaceted shipowner Mario Ferreira is now investing in euros in addition to investments in Media Capital/TVI [dinheiro] in another matter[ue] things are bad with profit: private aviation,” he wrote in one of the publications. “And it will fly to[ara] Brazil, imitating OMNI?,” he added.

During the sentencing, which was not attended by Mário Ferreira, the judge said it had not been proven that the former MEP wanted to link the businessman to drug trafficking.

Despite understanding that such a publication was damaging to the businessman’s honor, the judge noted that Ana Gomez, in addressing this issue, meant to suggest that the businessman’s involvement in aviation could be related to illegal activities, and not to drug trafficking.

Prioritizing the right to freedom of expression, the judge emphasized that the topic of aviation is already a topic that the former candidate of Belém has repeatedly spoken about.

Despite understanding that the content of the message was “completely unnecessary” to generate public interest in aviation, which was its purpose.

In court, Ana Gómez assured that “the only thing she wanted to do was the lack of control at national airfields, where all kinds of abuses are observed.” “I didn’t want to hint at a connection with drug trafficking, because I didn’t have and don’t have such evidence, but money laundering, yes.”

Mario Ferreira reiterated that “the hints were very clear” regarding drug trafficking, and stated that Ana Gomez took the opportunity to attach her name to OMNI, “stating that she was going to imitate her and carry out this type of transport.”

Mario Ferreira’s lawyer, Rui Patricio, said he would analyze the decision and then consider whether to appeal as he needed to see “whether the courts are turning Portugal into an opportunity to say whatever you want without any consequences.”

This was the fourth lawsuit filed by the businessman against Ana Gomez.
