Socialist leader Luisa Salgueiro argues that the PS, PSD and CDS must seek a “negotiating balance” that will make the 2024 state budget viable, but conditions the Socialist vote on the AD’s ability to dialogue.
In statements to the newspaper Publicthe president of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), who supported Pedro Nuno Santos in the internal elections of the PS against José Luis Carneiro and Daniel Adrian, expresses a different position than the current secretary general of the PS, although it conditions her ability to dialogue with the party of Luis Montenegro.
“The PS vote will always depend on the AD’s ability to dialogue and negotiate,” Luisa Salgueiro told Público.
According to the Socialist mayor, the PS vote on the budget “will depend on the AD’s ability to read the election results objectively and democratically and the need to find a space for rapprochement that will serve the country and the Portuguese, while maintaining respect for the will expressed by the voters.”
“The Portuguese demand political maturity from their representatives and in particular from the new government,” he argues, then interpreting the election results: “The Portuguese have clearly stated that they want such a negotiating balance, without exaggeration and without ideological extremism.” .
Regarding the negotiations, if they succeed, Luisa Salgueira believes that the PS must “guarantee that the public budget is balanced and respects the lines of economic and social action that have allowed the country to grow in recent years” and thus guarantee “its commitment to voters.
Luisa Salgueiro’s position differs from that publicly defended by the new Socialist leader, which is that it is “very difficult” for the PS to make the AD budget viable given the political distances between the two parties’ government programs.
Another of the socialists interviewed by Público, Lures City Council President Ricardo Leão, fully shared the position of Pedro Nuno Santos.
“I don’t know what OE2025 will be like, but I fully share the Secretary General’s opinion. It is almost impossible for the PS to make the state budget viable. It was AD who won the elections, and it was AD who achieved success. guarantee the approval of the budget,” he said.
