The Education Minister announced the start of negotiations with teachers next week

Education Minister Fernando Alexandre announced this Friday that the schedule for negotiations with teachers on the restoration of working hours “will be announced next week.”

Upon arrival at the Palacio da Ajuda, where the 41 secretaries of state that make up the government of Luis Montenegro will be inaugurated, Fernando Alexandre was questioned by journalists about the fact that higher education does not have autonomous supervision and remains under his jurisdiction and about the schedule of negotiations with teachers.

“It will be announced next week,” he said simply, declining further comment.

The Minister of Education, Science and Innovation has already clarified this Thursday in Luse’s statements that higher education, for which he was not appointed Secretary of State, will be under his responsibility.

Speaking to reporters at the entrance to the Palacio da Ajuda, Fernando Alexandre dismissed the idea that the decision represented weakness, arguing that now “the higher education system has a maturity that it would not have had 10, 15, 20 years ago “

“And what the government must provide is the resources, the predictability and the institutions must use the autonomy that they so demand and that they ask for until it is strengthened so that they can carry out their actions jointly with the region, with the companies and fulfill their role as they have been doing very well in recent years, but it is important that this role is further strengthened,” he said.

According to the new government official, his team was created to provide “the necessary skills to cover all aspects,” noting that the government program stipulates that “the government, in relation to higher education institutions, is the regulatory body that guarantees resources, but these institutions , exercising their autonomy, can fulfill their mission.”

“Higher education in Portugal is so established that we don’t even need to talk about it directly. And the fact that the minister has a university degree and experience, to say the least, in university administration should not be a problem.” , he noted.

The “Super” Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation of the XXIV Constitutional Government will have two state secretaries for education and one for science, but neither of them will be exclusively dedicated to higher education.
