Alert, the mascot dog of the Lisbon Volunteer Firefighters, was known to many Lisbon residents. I enjoyed walking around the Marques de Pombal area. He took his last walk on Wednesday. He died on Avenida Duque de Lole, the victim of a hit-and-run. The driver fled. Expressions of grief and anger are multiplying on social media, with calls to find out who is to blame for the accident. Alert was 12 years old.
The dog was adopted by the Lisbon Volunteer Firefighters and became their mascot after he was rescued from the bushes at about three months old by Shandra Ameida, an animal friend who named him Bono. When he arrived at the barracks, he changed his name to Alerta.
“I’m devastated,” Shandra Ameida wrote on her Facebook page. “Whoever runs over an animal and runs away, runs over a person and runs away, knowing who it is, justice must prevail. I’m not saying that he ran into him on purpose, but it’s undignified to run away,” complains Fernando Cardoso. “They could have at least stopped and provided assistance,” says Fernanda Nunez.
