PS Madeira will participate in the regional elections of May 26 with a list of “renewal” and “unification”, announced this Monday the president of the regional structure, Paulo Cafofo, noting that there are divisions within the PSD.
“This is an updated list because we have five new candidates as candidates for the top 10 spots. Besides me, as the head of the list, and the General Secretary of the Socialist Party [Marta Freitas]“We also have mayors like Ricardo Franco and Emanuel Camara, as well as MEP Sara Cerdas,” Paulo Cafofo emphasized in his statements before the meeting of the PS/Madeira political commission, which takes place at the party’s headquarters in Funchal.
However, the list of candidates for the next elections has already been approved, a PS source told the Lusa agency.
Paulo Cafofo, Marta Freitas (former PS deputy of the Assembly of the Republic elected by the Madeira circle), Ricardo Franco (President of the Machico Chamber), MEP Sara Cerdas and Emanuel Camara (President of the Porto Moniz Chamber) are the first five names on the list of socialists. None of them were candidates in the last regional elections, held on September 24.
The list of candidates for the September regional elections was headed by Sérgio Gonçalves, then president of PS/Madeira, followed by Sancha Campanella, Ruy Cayetano, Silvia Silva and Avelino Conceição.
“I am confident that this is a list of outstanding achievements that represents the Socialist Party, but which reflects what the people of Madeira and Porto Santens want from the Socialist Party, with unity, quality, competence and experience that are highlighted here,” Paulo Cafofo emphasized today .
“Of course, among these people there are also people who have already collaborated with the Socialist Party and are deputies, such as Sérgio Gonçalves, Victor Freitas, Jacinto Serran and Ruy Cayetano,” he added.
Asked whether the top five names included candidates dissatisfied with the party, Paulo Cafofo said that “the PSD is on a collision course,” explaining that “Miguel Albuquerque and Manuel Antonio Correia do not understand each other.”
“If there are divisions here, it is within the SDP; the PS, as you can see, has a strong list here,” he emphasized.
Paulo Cafofo also said in response to reporters that the conversation with the presidents of the municipalities of Machico and Porto Moniz “was very easy”, and noted that they had enough “clarity” and “dignity” to realize that “they can make an additional contribution to Regional Assembly.”
In any case, he added, the two mayors serving their third term as heads of their municipalities will remain in their municipalities until the end.
On March 27, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved Madeira’s parliament and called early elections for May 26. The decision was announced after hearing the nine parties that have seats in the region’s parliament – SDP, PS, JPP, Enough CDS-PP, PCP, IL, BE and PAN – and preside over the State Council.
The Madeira government, part of the PSD/CDU-PP coalition with parliamentary support from the PAN, has been in power since early February after the executive president, Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, asked to resign. his position after he was named as a defendant in a trial investigating allegations of corruption in the archipelago.
