Hugo Soares will go to the polls today as the only candidate for the post of parliamentary leader of the PSD.

PSD Secretary General Hugo Soares will go to the vote this Tuesday as the only candidate for the post of parliamentary leader of the party. He holds this position for six years, but only for seven months.

The leadership list of the parliamentary group included 12 vice-presidents, including former President of the Order of Doctors Miguel Guimarães as first “deputy”, municipal coordinator Pedro Alves, JSD leader Alexandre Pozo and Hugo Carneiro, former director of Rui Rio.

Four “deputies” are leaving the former leadership of the college, headed by Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, now the Minister of Finance and State: Alexandre Poço, Hugo Carneiro, Andreia Neto and Hugo Oliveira.

The remaining new vice-presidents proposed by Hugo Soares, in addition to Miguel Guimarães and Pedro Alves, are Regina Bastos, Silverio Regalado, Isaura Morais, Cristovan Norte, Joao Valle e Azevedo and António Rodrigues.

Elections for the new leadership of the SDP parliamentary group will take place from 14:00 to 16:00.

Miguel Guimarães was one of the independent deputies included in the list of deputies of the Democratic Alliance (the electoral coalition between PSD, CDS-PP and PPM), leading the list from Porto, as did João Valle e Azevedo, an economist. and a member of Banco do Portugal, who was number five in Lisbon.

Also on the Lisbon list are two more future “MPs” who will return to Parliament as a result of many MPs leaving the capital for government: Regina Bastos, a former MEP and former Secretary of State for Health, and António Rodrigues, who was a member Assemblies of the Republic in Legislative Assemblies VII and XII.

As secretaries of the parliamentary group, Hugo Soares proposes Almira Moreiro, elected by Aveiro, and Dulcinea Moura, head of the Guarda list.

Hugo Soares was first elected parliamentary leader of the PSD on July 19, 2017, with 85.4% of the vote, and succeeded Luis Montenegro, the current PSD president and prime minister.

In February 2018, he called early elections for the parliamentary group after new PSD president Rui Rio expressed a desire to work with a different college leadership, and was succeeded by Fernando Negrao, elected by less than 40% of parliament members. vote.

Hugo Soares is from Braga, born on March 2, 1983 (he turned 41 during the last election campaign) and has been Montenegro’s right-hand man for the past few years.

President of the Social Democratic Youth from 2012 to 2014, he was a member of the Assembly of the Republic from June 2011 to October 2019.

A lawyer by profession and business administrator, he returned to the forefront of political life after the victory of the current PSD president in the 2022 internal elections and took up the position of secretary general. In the legislative elections on March 10, he headed the list from Braga.
