However, the President of the Republic wanted to transfer the award to the remaining members of the Junta of National Salvation, created at the end of April 25 after the coup that overthrew the government of Marcelo Cayetano.
The reason why the President did not disclose the awards is unknown, but according to Public, can be interpreted as a way to avoid public controversy. We are talking about an open letter written by several figures after it became known in 2022 that the head of state would award António Spinola.
The letter, which described the award as an “insult”, referred to the fact that Spinola created the Democratic Movement for the Liberation of Portugal, a far-right terrorist organization that the current vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic, Diogo, joined.
