The government of Luis Montenegro (Democratic Alliance) wants to make Portuguese the official language of the United Nations by 2030, while maintaining support for Ukraine in the fight against “Russian aggression” and the two-state solution of Israel and Palestine.
In the chapter entitled “Global and Humanistic Country” of the XXIV Constitutional Government Programme, the executive states that it is “convincingly and ambitiously committed to the four pillars” of Portugal’s foreign policy: “an active commitment to European construction, the deepening and strengthening of the Lusophone space, the intensification of transatlantic cooperation and defending multilateralism.”
At the UN, the government commits to “promoting the candidacy of Portuguese as an official language of the UN until 2030” – a desire of Portuguese diplomacy and other Lusophone countries also advocated in the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP).
Regarding ongoing conflicts, the program states that Portugal “within the framework of the European Union and NATO will support Ukraine at the humanitarian, political, financial and military level, in defense against aggression by the Russian Federation, in reconstruction plans and efforts.” and in the ongoing process of EU enlargement.”
