The head of the PS list for the early legislative elections in Madeira, Paulo Cafofo, said this Monday that the choice of voters should be between them and the Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, the outgoing president of the Madeira executive.
“On May 26, the choice is clear: either the people want me to become president of the regional government, or they want Miguel Albuquerque to become president of the regional government. These are the only two options,” the PS/Wood leader also said.
Paulo Cafofo spoke to journalists after presenting the list of candidates for the early elections (47 incumbents and 47 replacements) at the Madeira County Judicial Court in Funchal, believing that it is “united, comprehensive” and includes experienced and competent people.
The socialist insisted that on election day the choice is between the SDP, “which has been in power for almost 50 years, which is falling apart, which is tied up, entangled in a web of interests,” and the PS, “which has solutions, ideas, innovations that you want to offer solutions to problems that have existed for too long.”
“It must be said that the time of the absolute majority has passed, there is no longer an absolute majority, and in this context, in which there is no longer an absolute majority, there are opposition parties that say they want change, but this is at the first opportunity. And on the very night of the elections there will be an opportunity to come to an agreement with the SDP,” he specified, clarifying that we are talking about Chega, the Liberal Initiative, SDS-PP and PAN.
According to Paulo Cafofo, by voting for these parties, “voters will want Miguel Albuquerque to continue to lead the regional government,” repeating that “the Socialist Party will therefore be the only option.”
Asked about the news published this Monday in the print edition of Correio da Manhã, which states that the judicial authorities froze 170 thousand euros to the wife of Miguel Albuquerque, who tried to transfer this amount three days after the searches carried out by the judge, Cafofo did not want to comment .
“I have no comment on the newspaper headlines or other situations that appeared in the media this Monday. I am only focused on the solutions we want to offer to the people of Madeira,” he said.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved Madeira’s parliament and called early elections for May 26 after a political crisis caused by an investigation into alleged corruption in the archipelago.
The regional government, part of the PSD/SDS-PP coalition, with parliamentary support from the PAN, has been in power since early February. The head of the executive, Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, asked to resign after being accused of blame in the trial and the PAN losing his political credibility.
