The Minister of Defense advocates solving police and military problems at the same level

The Minister of National Defense and President of the CDS-PP, Nuno Melo, said in an interview with Expresso newspaper that the problems of the police and the military must be solved simultaneously and according to the same plan.

In an interview, Nuno Melo says he cannot think of areas of sovereignty such as defense that are divorced from the security forces.

“These areas of sovereignty should be considered together and on the same plane. If the PSP and PPR security forces have very legitimate concerns, there are also very legitimate concerns about the Armed Forces and therefore, “I believe the government should consider its ruling at the same level,” he said.

When asked whether subsidies for the security forces will be equivalent to subsidies for the judicial police, whether the same equivalence of subsidies and additional payments for the military will be ensured, Nuno Melo replies that “it would be very strange if, during the negotiation process, he announced in an interview specific decisions that are beyond your control.

“The process is underway and I hope, I believe that the government will translate into concrete measures, as far as possible, taking into account budgetary contingencies, measures that will be useful and important for the security forces, the PSP and the PNP,” he said.

The Defense Minister stressed that, as far as the armed forces are concerned, issues that have existed for a long time and are a priority have been clearly identified and a package is under consideration aimed at recruiting, but especially at retaining personnel in the field.

“I understand that it is absolutely necessary to treat at the same level of dignity — in terms of responses to claims, regardless of specific formulas — what is the military reality and the reality of the security forces. There are claims from the security forces that they are fair, and the military has fair intentions, I am the Minister of Defense, and it only makes sense for me to be the Minister of Defense if I have the opportunity to solve problems in the field of defense,” he said. .

According to Nuno Melo, there are problems that need to be solved, and one of them is related to the necessary dignity of the Armed Forces.

“This does not happen through speeches, but through concrete actions,” he emphasized.

The minister adds that he is working on two priorities: “measures to promote the greatness of the Armed Forces in an environment that promotes the retention of military personnel and ex-combatants in service.”

When asked whether these measures could become an amendment to the Military Regulations, which the President of the Republic has already called for, Nuno Melo recalls that “there are parts of the legislation on the armed forces that have not changed since 2009” and that “the world has changed.” and the needs of the Armed Forces have increased.”

In this sense, according to the minister, everything that is justified will be changed.

In an interview, Nuno Melo insists that the world has changed since the end of compulsory military service and the emergence of professionalization.

“There were things that worked very well, but there were things that should have happened that didn’t happen. When it comes to recruitment, much less retention, these problems have been exposed. We must find new solutions. Other solutions will think about forms of recruitment that will not be mandatory, will be voluntary, that is, beyond the existing ones,” he indicated.
