Investigator Francisco Pauperio wins the Livre primaries and heads the list

Researcher and Livre leader Francisco Pauperio will lead the party’s list in the European elections in June after winning domestic primaries, it was announced this Saturday.

In a statement, Livre reports that Francisco Pauperio, who had already won the first round, again took first place in the second round of the primaries, in which six candidates competed, with 5667 points, followed by the leader and second number of the party in Porto in the last legislative elections Filipa Pinto scored 3777 points.

Francisco Pauperiu is 28 years old, born in Lesa da Palmeira, Matosinhos, and is a researcher by profession. He obtained a degree in Biology with a specialization in Bioinformatics from the Faculties of Sciences of the Universities of Porto and Lisbon and is currently pursuing a PhD in Integrative Biology and Biomedicine at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia.

In the March legislative elections he was the party’s number three in the Porto constituency.

In third place in the second round was the leader Carlos Teixeira, who was also a candidate for Lisbon in the last legislative elections, the researcher Mafalda Damaso, followed by the chief of staff of Livra in the Assembly of the Republic and the municipal deputy in Oeiras, Tomás Cardoso Pereira and finally , Ines Pires, who headed the Leiria list in the last legislative elections.

On Tuesday, the Livre Electoral Commission for the European primary decided to limit voting in the second round to members and supporters (i.e. activists) as it considered there were “clear signs of rigging” of the process due to non-party citizens signing up for participation.

That decision was overturned Thursday night by the Commission on Ethics and Arbitration, which is part of the party’s Jurisdictional Council, because “no specific conduct reflecting bias in the election process was investigated.”

According to the electoral commission, the problem was that the candidate – Francisco Pauperio, who came first in the 1st round – appeared “with an excessive number of single votes (those coming from a voter who chose only one candidate)”, counting this number ” excessive compared to other primaries and compared to other candidates in this election.”

According to the basic regulations of the Livre, during voting the selection is made “by ordering the candidates, preferably from 1 to 6”, although this is not mandatory.

There are two forms of activism in the Livre: members, who have the right to elect and be elected to internal positions, vote on strategic documents and pay dues; and supporters who do not make monetary donations but may run for office or be elected in primaries.

Participation in the Livre primaries is open to any citizen, provided they sign the party’s constitution, respect the code of ethics and sign an “agreement of commitment”, otherwise political trust will be revoked.

All citizens who choose to vote in the Livre primaries must make an honorable pledge to “participate in good faith in the process of open primaries and ensure their fairness and integrity,” subscribe to the principles and political program of the Livre, and declare who is not part of another political process. party.

European elections are scheduled for June 9.
