A road collision between a bus and a farm tractor killed one person on Wednesday morning on the EN17 highway near the junction with Melo, in the municipality of Gouveia, Guarda district, Civil Protection agency Lusa reported.
According to the subregional command for emergencies and civil protection of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, a warning about a road collision between a heavy passenger vehicle carrying students and a farm tractor was received at 7:51 am.
“Initially, the victim, who was the driver of the tractor, was in serious condition, but in the meantime he was pronounced dead,” a source in the Civil Defense said.
GNR da Guarda told Lusa that the 79-year-old tractor driver was killed in the two-vehicle collision.
Melo Volunteer Fire Department Second Chief Carlos Costa confirmed that the victim was initially classified as seriously injured but ultimately died from his injuries.
The same source said that there were no injuries among the passengers on the bus that took the students to Gouveia.
Traffic on this section of EN17 is restricted.
Melo Fire Service, GNR and the Guard Ambulance and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) were at the scene for a total of six vehicles and 11 serviceable vehicles.
