The Judicial Police (PJ) and the Service for Foreigners and Border Guards (SEF) announced this Friday the arrest in Peniche of a foreign national covered by an international arrest warrant issued by Brazil, who was being held in preventive detention.
The 37-year-old has been wanted by Interpol since August 2022 after he was sentenced to seven years in prison in Brazil for international drug trafficking, PJ and SEF said.
The fugitive, who was investigated by PJ and SEF in order to determine his whereabouts, was arrested in the middle of the street in Peniche, Leiria district, and after hearing this Friday in the Court of Appeal of Coimbra, he was under preventive detention pending the extradition process requested by the Brazilian the authorities.
The JV statement said that the facts that led to the defendant’s conviction date back to 2014, when he “was found to have a significant amount of drugs.”
According to the judiciary, in 2018 the detainee traveled from Brazil to Dubai, and from there to Portugal.
