Paulo Raimundo says there are opportunities for cooperation with former colonies

PCP Secretary General Paulo Raimundo said this Saturday that there are opportunities for cooperation with former colonies and that while history cannot be forgotten, it is important to look to the future.

“There is space for cooperation and there is a great willingness of these countries to cooperate in several areas, on several fronts,” said Paulo Raimundo, explaining that this was the message he heard from the presidents of the various presidents of the countries who participated on Thursday to Friday during celebrations on April 25th.

Without specifying whether he agreed or not with the position of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on the need for the Portuguese government to move forward in paying historical reparations to former colonies, the PCP leader said that “there is a history that cannot be forgotten” and that this is “a big the demand of the Portuguese people and the inhabitants of the former colonies for the truth and for future generations.”

From the speeches made by African heads of state during the celebrations, Paulo Raimundo highlighted today the “fundamental question of the role of the common struggle” between the peoples of the colonies and metropolises “for the liberation of the country.” , their countries and our people of fascism.”

This is a “great element of unity”, which, according to the leader of the PKP, is fundamental at a time when “history must not be forgotten”, but, on the other hand, it is important to “look forward with the advantage of having a part of these peoples, these states showing every readiness for cooperation in the future.”

“There is a common unity, there is a common line of thought that the peoples of the colonies and the Portuguese people were freed from fascism,” he said, emphasizing “the decisive role of these people in the liberation from fascism.”

Paulo Raimundo spoke in Peniche, Leiria district, where this Saturday he was part of the PCP delegation that took part in the parade organized by the Union of Anti-Fascist Resistance of Portugal (URAP).

The march, attended by hundreds of people, marked an “extraordinary date,” said Paulo Raimundo, recalling that 50 years ago “the political prisoners held here in this fort were released.”

Celebrating “the end of fascism, the end of prisons, the end of a hated regime, a fascist and authoritarian regime,” the PCP leader ended the march in Fort de Peniche, which was “one of the greatest symbols” of the regime and where the Museum of Resistance and Freedom is today open.
