On Tuesday, the Liberal Initiative asked for an urgent hearing with Defense Minister Nuno Melo to explain the intention to force young people who have committed petty crimes into military service instead of being institutionalized.
The information was also shared by Rui Rocha on the social network X (formerly Twitter), in which he condemned the “unspeakable intention to attract petty criminals to military service.”
“The Armed Forces must be treated with dignity. The way is not to turn them into a penal colony for petty criminals,” concluded Rui Rocha.
“Given the importance of the debate on rebuilding our Armed Forces, it is vital that the government explains to the Assembly of the Republic its vision, as well as what structural solutions it is considering. Finally, the Liberal Initiative believes that it is critically important to clarify statements made by the Minister of Defense and supported by the Home Secretary to clarify the Government’s commitment to using entry into the Armed Forces as a punishment, and if so, on what terms this decision is being considered.” read in the liberals’ document.
Nuno Melo said that the institutions “in most cases function only as a school for lifelong crime”, to which Interior Minister Margarida Blasco added that the Minister of Defense “spoke on behalf of the entire government.”
