From Saturday to May 14, the PNP will increase patrols on the main access roads to Fatima and support pilgrims heading to the shrine for the May 13 religious holiday.

In a statement, the National Republican Guard (NRG) said Operation Safe Pilgrimage 2024 aims to support and guarantee the safety of pilgrims during their journeys, as well as strengthening policing in the Fatima Sanctuary and surrounding areas.

Operation Safe Pilgrimage 2024 will be carried out in two phases, the first of which will begin from Saturday to May 11, by guarding the most important routes, namely pedestrian routes used by pilgrims, as well as areas around the event site and relevant sections of access roads. .

The second phase of the operation will take place from May 12 to 14 to “guarantee the safety of religious celebrations taking place in the Fatima Sanctuary and surrounding areas.”

Since most people participating in pilgrimages travel on foot, in large groups, often traveling on busy roads and with narrow or no shoulders, the NPR leaves some tips for pilgrims, such as “walking in single file” and signaling. beginning and end of groups.

Pilgrims are also advised to always wear, day and night, reflective vests, not to walk in places where pedestrian traffic is prohibited, not to use headphones, headphones or mobile phones, to take breaks while walking, and not to walk alone at night. , always gather your group off the road and be especially careful when crossing roads.

In the city of Fatima and the Sanctuary, the PNP advises pilgrims to arrive early to avoid long lines and to avoid leaving goods in plain sight inside vehicles, and to leave “calmly and gradually” after the ceremonies, keeping children and the elderly in mind.
