Members of the Frelimo party considered that the choice of Daniel Chapo as a candidate for the Mozambique elections meets the expectations of the younger and majority voters, emphasizing the bet on a figure who “knows the ropes.”
“The decision that Frelimo [Frente de Libertação de Moçambique] took it. This will matter because most voters see themselves in our candidate. He is an old candidate with a lot of energy, so this is really a renewal that marked the next elections,” Celso Correia, a member of the Frelimo Political Commission (CC), told reporters on Sunday after the close of the elections meeting at the party school in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo.
The Frelimo CC on Sunday evening and three days later approved with 225 votes (94.1%) the selection of 47-year-old Daniel Chapo as candidate for the position of President of the Frelimo Republic in the general elections in October.
“It is important that all young people think about this commitment that Frelimo has made for the coming years,” stressed Celso Correia.
Samora Machel Junior, a member of the party’s Central Committee who has expressed his intention to run for the post, also stressed the importance of the youth stakes in the next presidential elections in Mozambique.
“I am pleased with Daniel Chapo, and so is the entire Central Committee. This is the result of a lot of work, and here we have him young. We can all be congratulated,” emphasized the son of the first president of Mozambique, Samora Machel.
Veronica Makamo, member of the Political Committee and current Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, emphasized the importance of “leaving a legacy for the little ones,” especially “the best children.”
“It’s hard to find more than what we have as a candidate. Older people love to leave inheritances to young people, especially their best children. We are very happy,” he said.
Daniel Chapo, the current governor of Inhambane, graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo in 2000. He was born in Inhaminga, Sofala province, central Mozambique, on 6 January 1977 and is therefore the first Frelimo candidate born after the country’s independence, in 1975.
Daniel Francisco Chapo completed the conservator and notary course in 2004 and ten years later received a master’s degree in development management from the Catholic University of Mozambique. He also taught constitutional law and political science, worked as a broadcaster for Radio Miramar in the city of Beira, and was appointed conservator of the Nacala-Porto district in 2005.
In November 2015, he assumed the role of administrator of the Palma district in the province of Cabo Delegado, and in March 2016 he was appointed governor of the province of Inhambane.
Since Mozambique’s independence, all heads of state have been nominated by Frelimo, such as Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano (south), and Armando Guebuza and Filipe Nyusi (north), so Daniel Chapo is the first person nominated to be born in the central region of Mozambique. . a country.
The deadline for submitting lists of candidates for the President of the Republic for the October elections to the Constitutional Council is June 10.
Mozambique will hold its seventh presidential and legislative elections on October 9: the second for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
