Enough wants to reinstate border controls and overhaul citizenship law

Chega will hold a debate on immigration in parliament to propose the renewal of border controls and a revision of the citizenship law, the party leader said this Friday in Porto.

Speaking on Rua do Bonfim, where immigrants were attacked in the early hours of last Friday, Andre Ventura wanted to talk about illegal immigration and, referring to the attacks, said that “there is a context that gave birth to and provoked a situation that should never have happened.” “.

“Chega will hold a debate on immigration in Parliament, during which we will propose the renewal of border controls through the SEF. [que foi extinto]and where we are going to propose a revision of the citizenship law,” President Chegi said at a meeting with the media and the population, which he arrived about an hour late.

Early Friday morning, several immigrants were attacked in three different locations in the city of Porto. In one case, the attack took place on the home of 10 immigrants on Rua do Bonfim, where a group of 10 men invaded.

At least two of the attackers were treated at the Sao Joao hospital. Six men were identified and one was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, taken to court and remanded in custody.

Andre Ventura, in turn, wanted to talk about the message that he argued should be conveyed to countries around the world: “those who come for a good reason should come, those who come to work should come, but they should come with the legal process.”

“We cannot continue to encourage illegal immigrants to come, because otherwise they will come, all of them, many will come, and we do not have the opportunity to receive them,” insisted the party leader.

And he continued: “I am very sorry for those who are not here to follow the rules or who have not followed the rules, but the Portuguese state must do the same thing that the English state does. [e que] is to return them to their countries of origin.”

The Conservatives in power in the United Kingdom, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, approved legislation in April that aims to deport thousands of immigrants to Rwanda by the end of the year.

Under the law, which is being contested by human rights groups and an earlier version of which was overturned by the UK Supreme Court, migrants’ asylum claims will be assessed in Rwanda without the possibility of being returned to the UK, regardless of the outcome.

When asked whether he defended having a previous work contract to receive immigrants in Portugal, the Chegi leader confirmed and went further: “Almost everywhere, in the best countries in the world, entry was a mandatory requirement, or it required a work contract or the promise of a work contract or the means to existence.”

He spoke for about half an hour with local merchants, from whom he heard complaints of “lack of security”, and then went to the police station of the 1st department of Porto, where he met with Intendente Curva, a representative of the capital’s command. Porto da PSP and Commissioner Moreira from this police station revealed police sources to Lusa.

Regarding the May 3 attacks in Porto, Andre Ventura said: “We know that there is a context that gave rise to and provoked a situation that should never have happened.”

“And it is the duty of the party leader to come and talk to the shopkeepers who will have reasons to complain, to talk to the residents who will also have their reasons to complain, and to the police to find out and understand what we can do. not only improve the situation, but also give a warning and a signal to the government that something needs to change,” he added.
