Rui Moreira accuses Bloc leader de Esquerda of having ‘problems with the truth’

This Monday, the mayor of Porto accused BE leader Mariana Mortagua of having “problems with the truth” regarding the demonstrations and once again challenged the amendment to the law adopted by the Assembly of the Republic.

“I think she has a problem with the truth, I think it’s been common knowledge since the election campaign, she has a problem with facts, and in this case, she’s again trying to build a narrative around lies,” the mayor said when asked about statements made by the leader of the Bloc de Esquerda regarding the initiative of the Herge Te party, on Saturday in Porto.

At a press conference with his Lisbon counterpart, Rui Moreira said that Erguete was a “recognized party” and that BE “will have to participate in the elections with a legitimate party and that the Constitutional Court has allowed it to form as a party.” and participate in the European elections.”

Rui Moreira stressed that the demonstrations were “not sanctioned” by the local authorities, but brought to them, so he could not prevent the Erguete initiative or other demonstrations that took place in the city, since he would be committing a crime if he did so.

“It turns out that the Bloc de Esquerda knows this very well,” he said, adding that as long as he is president, “the Porto City Council respects the Constitution and will always do its best to comply with the law.”

Assuring that if the demonstrations could have been prevented, “it certainly would have prevented them,” Rui Moreira stressed the need for parliament to change the law.

“Mariana Mortagua can demand a change in the law, I cannot, I am not in parliament, but she is, and therefore, instead of lying, because objectively it is a repeated lie, it was repeated by Mariana Mortagua and other deputies, it is better. It would be necessary to explain, firstly, who can decide whether a demonstration can be held or not, namely the party participating in the elections,” he said.

Bloc de Esquerda leader Mariana Mortagua said on Saturday that Rui Moreira was “choosing a far-right position”, criticizing the mayor for not preventing the Herge Te party’s initiative, which took place in front of the parliament building. building of the Junta do Bonfim, the parish in Porto where attacks on immigrants took place on May 4.
